When We Were Mortals

So, the blurb is up and it sounds interesting. That said, it doesn’t begin to provide a glimpse into what the story entails. What follows is my best attempt to not provide spoilers: Anessa (protagonist) wakes confused and she immediately bails her home. Her quest for answers leads her to a Gypsy camp where she meets her soon-to-be bestie, Zara. Together they land a job at a university (cooking and cleaning). One day, Anessa bumps into a professor, Ryan, who feels strong attractions, as Anessa reminds him of an important person from his past. Oh, this also sorta starts a battle for humanity. Realms, God(s), magicians, immortals, a sin-eater, forbidden knowledge and love, betrayal, and twists and turns fill the pages. I am far from religious, but if you have a basic understanding of Adam and Eve and Christianity, you will find numerous parallels, mis-information and/or direction, and a continuance of common threads.

Translation: If you are a bible-thumper, you may not want to read this tale. If you ‘just’ have a belief though – this may be a fun read. For me, the introduction of the Una Vis (all energy and creation/universe) was quite fun. Of course, having a history of misinformation to keep the masses ignorant – score. When realms collide and power-hungry gods throw a hissy-fit, the fall-out could destroy our Earth. Luckily, there are those that would die before they let that happen. In sum, I thought the story was pretty interesting. There is a solid cast of characters. The version of the book I read did provide some challenges. The advance copy was in major need of a good editor. Some of the syntax is clunky, which is only acceptable from a debut, self-published-author. If I read future work, I won’t be so kind. If the story hadn’t been intriguing, I’d have stopped reading solely on the lack of editing. Thus – I hope the version YOU will read is cleaned up and ready for your enjoyment. 4 of 5 Stars. ARC provided.

From the Publisher:

Imagine waking up and finding yourself at the lowest point of your life, without having any memory of how you got there. You look for clues as to who and what you are, finding nothing but versions of your life that don't feel real. You are told lies and fabricated stories that are only meant to protect you, but end up only driving you further away from the people you love. As you search for what you know is out there, the actual truth, you realize that it is hidden under layers of more information than your limited brain can understand. Only when you accept the fact that you are more than what you see, can you learn to understand it.
