Seeds of a New Birth

The author reached out via email looking for reviews. Although I never responded, as the book was free (Kindle) at the time, I would not have necessarily found this on my to-read shelf. I've read some genetic-manipulation/future-state books in the past, so nothing was glaringly shocking as far as the theme went. That said, I flew through this book as it is a quick read.I'm not going to regurgitate the short synopsis of the book. However, I do want to touch on a couple areas, so beware that there are minor spoilers below.

<<<Seriously, here come some spoilers >>>>

Okay, so suspend all logic to set up the catalyst of this book. Namely, a college buddy easily sneaks his way through a secure genetics research lab to startle his old fraternity brother, Dr. Lionel Adams. Firstly, not going to happen. Secondly, I am suspect of a geneticist being in the same fraternity as a self-identified playboy. Flip MacDougal is the quintessential douche. He has many on/off relationships; a revolving door of only the hottest, business-driven ladies. Okay, I don't begrudge this as adults are adults. However, I love the slight twist that knocks Flip down a notch or three. He gets screwed by one of his ladies, which isn't cool or warranted. At first, I thought the author chose this to show evil. However, the 'evil' that comes later didn't come from this woman, so....head scratching a bit on this one. There isn't a great deal of suspense in this book. Bradford lays the cards on the table pretty early. The rest of the book is the vehicle to connect the dots. Although this is book one of a series, I feel it does complete a story. There are questions answered and events happen through the conflict and climax. Yes, the door is open for more, but it doesn't end without a satisfying conclusion. In sum, this is fast read and shines a light on genetic manipulation, err - genetic engineering, which may have some interesting side-effects. I'd plot this more into YA (even with some sex scenes). It is predictable but was entertaining. That is my benchmark for books and 3-Star ratings. I've said before, and I'll say it again - 3 Stars shouldn't be a 'critical' review.

3 of 5 stars

From the Publisher:

Research geneticist and genetic engineer, Lionel Adams is on the verge of unlocking the vast reserves of the human mind. The head of the genetics research lab where Lionel works is excited about the possibilities and the potential mega-profits. But not nearly as excited as their foreign competitors who are counting on their inside man at Bio Vita to deliver Adam's secret into their hands. Lionel’s research takes a dramatic twist when his college buddy, Flip MacDougal, makes a surprise visit to Bio Vita that leads to a laboratory accident with devastating results. Their world spins out of control as they struggle to deal with the massive breakdown that threatens, not only the project but the entire world.

Will Mark choose to sit on the sidelines like he has his entire life, or will he risk it all to fight against a force so powerful it could very well destroy him?.
