Fun, fast, and entertaining. Although this is YA, this MAA reader greatly enjoyed the story. It is a fun paranormal adventure with just a dash of pararomance and for that, I'm grateful. As we are introduced to Evie, she is figuring out where she is and soon discovers that she is buried alive. Through some quick action and character introductions, the story unfolds and the transformation from 17 year old college-bound student, to reanimated (don't call her a zombie) butt kicker is set in motion.
She's quick, strong, and can consume information at remarkable speed. Rosetta Stone has nothing on Evie and learning languages. The main plot is something I'd like to dig into, but since the synopsis doesn't touch on it, I don't want to spoil the story. So, if you are reading this, do not read past the "spoiler alert."
I haven't a clue if this is the introduction to a series. It definitely is a complete story that leaves the door open for more. No cliffhangers. If this is a stand-alone book, then extra props to the author for penning a YA that doesn't read too much like a YA and concludes satisfactorily without kittens and rainbows.
I would not hesitate to read more from her.

Okay, so Evie along with her new team, sets out to track down the criminal boss behind a human trafficking ring. He's pretty evil and has a small army of his own. I surely didn't expect this from the brief synopsis. It made the story more dynamic and speaks upon how devastating this crime can be - even for those that survive the ordeal and are reunited with family. Many don't make it home. This book has violence as well as some creative killing. Evie has one goal - to get her sister back. She won't let her death stop her. 5 of 5 stars. Author provided copy.
From the Publisher:
Heartbreak is the toughest wound to heal. No one knows this better than Mark Schultz. He’s spent his life living under the thumb of certainty. The certainty that he will never live up to the dreams and aspirations he has, no matter what they may be. And this isn’t a story of depression, or righteous self-pity. It’s a story of a curse. One that’s haunted Mark his entire life.
This curse has followed Mark for 30 years, never allowing him to reach whatever it is he wants. Things will get in the way. Whether it’s a wall or a bolt of lightning all depends on the circumstances, and how hard Mark is willing to push back against it. However unfortunate this may be for Mark, there are people who appreciate the ability to control variables.
One of these people is Gabe Bhatt. He’s a gambler who’s just walked into Mark’s life, and he’s going to use Mark to bend the odds in his favor, on the racetrack, and everywhere else. Now Mark finds himself a slave again, this time not just to the whims of Lady Luck, but to this man who holds his fate and the fates of all who surround him in his hands.
Will Mark choose to sit on the sidelines like he has his entire life, or will he risk it all to fight against a force so powerful it could very well destroy him?.
