I highly urge you to plan time to read the Hunter chapters. If you are like me, and read in spurts during the day and dedicated time at night (and what reader doesn't do this!), it will greatly help you get into the book if you get through Hunter in solid chunks. He is an odd beast for sure. The flow of his inner, inner-inner, and outer dialogue is best consumed in full; clarity may hinge on this factor.
Cooper introduces Beige and Greene into the lineup; both females and strikingly opposite. Even though Hunter is a bit unhinged - as in a psychopath - Greene brings moments of balance into his chaotic world.
Beige is Sterling's 19-year-old sister. She reminds me of 16-year-olds for sure. The journey to the Outer Limits (OL) continues, and there are loads of violence, puddles of blood, metalzippers, rebellion, and destruction.
Kill or be killed.
After reading this book, assuming you read the first, you may question Halo's motivations. I do, at least. Personally, the best part of the book was near the end. I won't describe the setup, but only say that it provided me complete clarity to Hunter's appearance and struggles. I haven't been a fan of Hunter, but thanks to that glimpse, I think I'll end up liking him as the trilogy concludes.
In all, this is a pretty fast read. You will, or should, slow down during Hunter's leads. The action and pace are well done and I enjoy both Beige and Greene (I envision a wildling of GoT). The mood continues to be dystopian-depressing, but I'm left wondering just how everything will wrap.
I received an ARC of this book. I believe I have read the majority of this author's published material.
NOTE - There is no word on when Book 3 will be out. 5 of 5 Stars. ARC provided by author
From the Publisher:
More is revealed in the second book of the Zero Patient Trilogy as Halo and Sterling disrupt the Northern Servers. New characters are introduced including Sterling's younger sister, Beige, who plays a pivotal role as the trilogy progresses. Tragedy strikes, sending Sterling into revenge-seeking frenzy, and something happens in the Off Limits which will forever change the Canyon. In the South, Hunter is still on the hunt, guided by Halo and his blind religious fervor. An unexpected meeting adds a touch of humanity to his character, but at the same time, his bloodlust and violent urges are on the brink of cracking what's left of his sanity. No questions asked, no answers questioned. From the writer of Fantasy Online and The Feedback Loop series comes a dystopian cyberpunk story about humanity's greatest dividing factors. Religion, politics, environmental degradation, class warfare -- all play their roles in the Canyon, the last surviving colony of people on Earth.
