When reading, I noted references to prior events and then saw that there is a book one - a novella of 71 pages The Tahitian Tangle . Apparently this revolves around Avery and Justine and I don’t think readers will miss the backstory by jumping into The Hyperion Web (Jack Crockett Series Book 2). Regarding Hyperion, this book has an interesting story line with distinct characters. I sometimes found the narrative too telling, the action too cliche, and the characters pretty fun. The book, and flow, hits a sweet-spot near the end and sets up a continuation of the adventure. Although there is plenty remaining from Mitchell, readers won’t feel cheated by the ending. It is, in essence, a new beginning. I will say this - the character names are silly: Pennywise, Foulweather and others. Why is the POTUS always referred to by his first, middle, and last name? Things like this and the narrative, along with ridiculous outcomes throughout the read screamed unpolished author. BUT - the story was still quite fun. Special Ops, Shadow Ops, Conspiracy, Investigation, Death and destruction; enhanced with sentient-level AI, makes for a fun time. I struggled between 2 and 3 stars. The story line saved it for me.
