A Darker Magic

Weighing in at 44 pages, this novella moves quickly but does provided a beginning, middle, and end; the latter a bit more abrupt. I can say that it was an enjoyable read and you would/should like Durras.

Now - the rest will contain spoilers, so read with caution:

Seriously!

Durras and Mallie grew up together in their small farming community in the Highlands. The day before their wedding, Mallie disappears without word or trace. Durras sets off to find Mallie and is accompanied by his friend, Bertis, who has his own journey to begin.

The two travel down to the Lowlands and find Gamrie, whom teaches them how to fight. Once the two friends have some skill, Durras continues his quest to find Mallie and Bertis leaves to find a light mage for his extended training.

Durras does find Mallie, but she is in dire need of some help. Like, loads of help. The two find a mage and Mallie gets help....but it comes with a cost.

Okay. The rest is up to you to read. I think I glossed over enough to not spoil the read and definitely not the end.

Speaking of Darker Magic - and perhaps it is the fact I read this novella on a phone with my font set a certain way....but upon completing this tale, I noted my completion location was at 666 of 666. Coincidence or clever....doesn't really matter.

3.5 of 5 Stars - ARC provided.

From the Publisher:

When his beautiful bride-to-be disappears on the night before their wedding, Durras must search for her alone in a strange land, where his kind is not wanted. To make matters worse, he suspects that she has been taken by a powerful evil mage. He’s a simple highland boy, but he won’t rest until he has found her. “It's dangerous down there, boy," Gamrie growled. "They ain’t like us. Lowland mages ain’t interested in blessing the crops and healing the sick. No... they practice a darker magic."
