The two leads of this trilogy launch, Chris Smith and his daughter Maisie, find themselves at the cusp of the zombie apocalypse where the only ‘knowledge’ Chris has is ultimately from an old neighbor that has read and watched all things zombie. The largest bit of knowledge shared – once infected, you have eight hours left of your humanity. Then it is lights-out, only to reanimate as a flesh-consuming member of the hoard. **Possible Spoilers*** As I finished this short read, I was curious what is in store for the pair going forward, but in reality, the Chris Smith character is a load of dung. In the synopsis, is suggests “he’s never been much of a father…” but in reality he beats his family (wife, kids) and looks to ditch Maisie as quick as possible. He also finds a moment to doink a 15 year old virgin. So yeah, if he turns – no skin off my nose. Is this a long arc of redemption? Dunno. Maisie is the only redeeming element of this tale. Remove her, and this is a short installment of a book sectioned into three books. Billions are dead, but luckily a group of scientists are safe and working on a cure, which may/not come to save humanity. Outside of that, there isn’t anything new. However, if you haven’t read much in the zombie genre, you may find it more fulfilling. The pace and writing style are fine. In all – a three star book, for me, means it was entertaining enough to read. Editing is fine.

Note: 11.5.17: I noticed the original link was dead. This book appears to have been republished over the last week or two. I wonder what the reviews said that caused the author to republish....

From the Publisher:

Once infected, the virus shuts down organs, kills nerve impulses and even reprograms the way we think. The virus becomes us. But the process takes eight hours. If you only had eight hours left to live, what would you do? For Chris Smith, that decision has been made for him. He’s infected, and returns home to find the rest of his family undead or missing, save his youngest daughter Maisie. He’s never been much of a father, but can he make up for it now in the final few hours of his life and find somewhere safe for her to survive?
